Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker contender in the world by most of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught Phil penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to discover whatever he possibly could about poker. Phil would tell his grandparents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. Phil didn’t allow the negative feedback from other people destroy his ambition of being one of the best poker competitors on the planet.

Phil began competing seriously after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his game at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The initial number of years for Phil were a learning opportunity and winning wasn’t a common thing at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved two final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he destroyed a number of the better known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil decided to take his game to the successive level and moved out west to Sin City. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his achievements to hard work and an undying love for the game of poker. Phil states that he’s picking up skills every day and is quite abashed about his success. He admits to making errors in each game of poker and constantly strives to improve.

Despite the fact that Ivey has come first in some large tournaments, he likes winning money games on a normal basis.
