His grandpa taught Phil penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was addicted to poker and wished to pickup everything he possibly could about the game. Phil would tell his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not let the detrimental comments from others destroy his ambition of being one of the strongest poker competitors in the world.

Phil began competing seriously after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his game at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for him were a learning experience and coming away with a win wasn’t a common thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP when he made 2 final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he destroyed a number of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He made a decision to take his game to the next level and moved out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to hard work and an eternal passion for the game of poker. Phil states that he’s learning every day and is incredibly abashed about his achievements. He admits to making errors every single game of poker and constantly aspires to get better.

Despite the fact that Phil has won some big-time tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a regular basis.
