Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker contender on the planet by quite a few of the top pros. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before his first birthday. His papa taught Phil penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wished to learn anything he could about poker. Phil routinely told his grandparents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. He did not let the adverse comments from others annihilate his ambition of being one of the best poker competitors in the world.

He started competing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his abilities at the casinos in Atlantic City. The beginning few years for him were a learning period and coming away with a win wasn’t a regular thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved two final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he defeated quite a few of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Ivey credits his success to hard work and a continuing love for poker. He says that he’s picking up skills every single day and is quite abashed about his accomplishments. He knows he makes mistakes every single session of poker and constantly aspires to get better.

Even though Ivey has come first in some large tournaments, he favors winning money games on a normal basis.
