Phil Ivey has been branded as the greatest poker contender on the planet by quite a few of the top-ranked professionals. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before his first birthday. His papa taught him penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to learn anything he possibly could about poker. He routinely told his grandparents that he was going to be a professional poker player. He didn’t let the adverse feedback from other people kill his goal of becoming one of the strongest poker competitors in the world.

He began competing seriously after acquiring a false ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his skills at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first few years for him were a learning period and coming away with a win wasn’t a normal outcome at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he achieved two final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he destroyed a number of the well known professionals including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

He made a decision to take his game to the successive level and moved out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to discipline and an immeasurable love for poker. He states that he is learning every day and is incredibly abashed about his success. He knows he makes errors every single game of poker and always strives to get better.

Even though Ivey has come first in some big-time tournaments, he likes winning cash games on a normal basis.
